Tuscany Weekend Events from August 10th to 12th

 

Are you ready for an intense long weekend in Tuscany? Let’s have a look at the events going on this second weekend of August.

Medieval Festivals and Historical Re-Enactments

On Saturday and Sunday in the castle of Montieri in Maremma there is Tempora Artis Magicae, medieval festival with streets performers, knights, artisans working and much more. In Montalcino there is the Torneo di Apertura delle cacce, a medieval tournament between the four districts of the city. It dates back to 1300 when hunting became a sport. In Scansano the Medieval Festival goes on until August 15th bringing back the time to the Middle Ages.

In Villafranca Lunigiana there is a large medieval market going on from Saturday to August 15th with artisans working as well as street performers. In Castiglione di Garfagnana, small hamlet enclosed in massive walls, there is Medieval Festival on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday in San Casciano dei Bagni, thermal destination in the province of Siena there is the traditional Palio di San Cassiano, re-enacting ancient games between the city districts, ending with the peculiar race of the frogs. In Gavorrano on Sunday there is the historical re-enactment of the “Countess jump“, history of the Pia dei Tolomei told us by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy.

Food and Wine Fairs

On Friday night August 10th Tuscany celebrates Saint Lawrence and its falling stars with a goblet of good wine thank to Calici di Stelle 2012, organizing wine tastings and special stars observations all around the region.

In Macchie in the municipality of Arcidosso near Monte Amiata there is Patata Macchiaiola Festival, celebrating the local potatoes with traditional recipes prepared by locals. In Sagginale near Borgo San Lorenzo in Mugello there is the Tortello Festival, where you can taste handmade tortelli.
