Monteriggioni Medieval Festival

Starts Friday July 6th the 22° edition of “Moteriggioni di torri si corona“, literally Monteriggioni of towers is crowned.

The event

Monteriggioni is a small hamlet near Siena, located along the via Francigena. It was quoted by Dante Alighieri, who praised the ring of walls and precious crown of towers. And this Medieval Festival aims to bring the hamlet to its medieval splendor with lots of events.

Every day from 5pm to midnight live performances will entertain visitors with knights’ fightings, jugglers, acrobats and minstrels. The entire village will be part of the festival. The 2012 theme is “Heaven and Hell“, that is a reference to the Divine Comedy, and a suggestion to inspire universal issues.

In the local restaurants and open-air taverns you’ll taste delicious medieval food, such as spiced wine and antique recipes. There will also be a medieval arts & crafts market where you’ll buy local handmade products such as helmets, gauntlets and swords. Even the currency will be medieval, minted especially in three units. You will have to exchange your modern currency and use the medieval coins to buy food, drinks and souvenirs.

There will be also special activities for children all around the hamlet with educational workshops and games, traveling theater shows and jugglery corners. There will be puppet shows too and the theatrical re-enactment of historical battles.
