IGNEUS 1068

IGNEUS 1068 is the stunning re-enactment of Florence history in the Middle Ages. It takes places on Saturday and Sunday June 9th and 10th.

In 1068 Pietro da Pavia, called Mezzabarba, became bishop of Florence paying for sacraments and his positions. Giovanni Gualberto and the Vallmbrosan monks denounce Mezzabarba and Florence Church divided into two opposite parts fighting each other.

One day the Bishop’s army carried out a massacre of monks in Sal Salvi, but they didn’t fulfill their mission that was the assassin of Giovanni Gualberto. The Pope decided to step in and agree to the Fire trial asked by the Vallombrosan monks, so that God judgment could be shown to Florentince people.

On February 13th in 1068 thousands of people reached Badia a Settimo, outside Florence, despite the cold and the terrible weather. The Bishop Pietro Mezzabrba walked through the fire and on a hot tin roof. He escaped miraculously uninjured. Although the Pope Alexander II decided to dethrone the Bishop, since every one knew he had bought his position.

Every year in Badia a Settimo this episode is re-enacted with great costumes and lots of events. On Saturday and Sunday from 4 pm to midnight there will be the medieval market where you can buy leather objects, ceramics, wooden products and so on. You can observe scenes from medieval life, watch jugglers and musicians, as well as archery.

The Church, the Bells’ Tower and the Crypt of the Abbey will be open to visits. Then on Sunday at 9pm starts the costume parade that will arrive in the main square and re-enact the fire trial of Pietro Mezzabarba.
