Via Crucis in Grassina

The Stations of the Cross, or Via Crucis in Latin, is the representations of Christ carrying the Cross to his crucifixion. In Florence surroundings you can admire one of the most realistic and suggestive representations, that is the Via Crucis in Grassina.

This is an ancient tradition dating back to 17th century. It commemorates the Way of the Cross on the Good Friday with 500 characters, completely dressed up according to the history. There are Roman and Israelite soldiers, noble and poor women, the robbers and several horses. All figures in costume participate to a magnificent parade lasting over 90 minutes and retracing the most significants moments (called station) of Christ’s life on his way to crucifixion.

The location are the green Florentine hills around Grassina, creating an evocative natural scenario with olive trees, ginestre and narrow streets. The dialogs and texts are resumed by the Gospels according to St. Matthew, Luke and John, while the music are by important composers such Verdi, Beethoven, Stravinskij and others.

The celebrations start at 9 pm on the Good Friday in the center of Grassina. Entrance is on payment. For more information visit the official website.
