Mother's Day

On Sunday 13th we celebrate Mother’s Day. I’m pretty exciting since it’s my second celebrations and can’t wait for next year when my little boy will draw a picture for me!

In Italy we celebrate Monther’s day on the second Sunday in May. Its origins date back to polytheistic civilizations. In fact they used to celebrate the Goddess of fertility. Greeks used to celebrate their mother on a specific day that was related to the celebrations of Rea Goddess, mother of Greeks Gods. Romans used to celebrate for an entire week their mothers and the Goddess Cibele, symbol of Nature and of all mothers.

In Italy we celebrated Mother’s day for the first time in 1957, when Don Otello Migliosi celebrated a mess for all mothers in Assisi. Then it became a national celebration.

Nowadays the holiday lost all its religious meanings, but it’s still an important holiday. It’s the perfect day to say your mother you love her and thank her for all she’s done and does everyday for you. Here in Tuscany we celebrate our mothers with flowers and a special gift for her. I intend to bake some biscuits or a cake and writing her a card. I love my mum and I love to be a mum!
