Are you looking for a real unconventional place in Valdorcia? Well this is the place you’re looking for. It’s stunning!
Monticchiello
It’s a lovely hamlet dating back to 10th century. It’s located near Pienza along the most famous and most pictured road in Valdorcia, that locals cal “the calendar’s road” due to the many pictures in calendars and commercials of this curvy road.
The hamlet is partially enclosed in its massive walls and you enter through Sant’Agata Gates overlooking Valdorcia. Every street is picturesque with stone houses and flowers over balconies. In the center there is the 13th century Church of Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo, that is enriched by beautiful frescoes dating back to the Middle Ages. They depict the Confession, a very rare topic for that period.
Strolling around it looks like Monticchiello has been frozen by the time. It’s not a tourist village but a residential place with about 200 inhabitants and lots of cats. Right behind the church you can notice a fuchsia door that I loved and a corner house with a peculiar face on the wall.
I strongly recommend you stop by and enjoy this peaceful and lovely hamlet!
If you pass by between July and August you can attend one of the famous theater shows of Teatro Povero, transforming the town into an open-air theater. For more pictures visit the Facebook page!
