Discover Montemerano

Finally I find some time to tell you more about the last stop of #toomuchmaremma, a mini tour of Maremma I did at the end of August with my family. After discovering the Tuff cities of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana, I had the chance to discover this beautiful area of Southern Maremma.

Montemerano

Montemerano is an enchanting village near the more famous Saturnia and Manciano, located on the way to Scansano. It’s a medieval village, founded in the 13th century as hamlet of the Aldobrandeschi family.

It then became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, preserving its unique look. I was really amazed from its beauty: every street, square and corner is incredibly beautiful. The most famous part is the Fortress and its nice square with lots of flowers and plants. I loved the ancient doors in square, its buildings but more in general every part of the whole center.

Then there is the high bells’ tower, that if you look carefully you see it’s a bit leaning because of a lightning. I was really surprised by the stunning Church of San Giorgio, dating back to the late Middle Ages and preserving incredible frescoes as well as the main altar’s polyptych by Renaissance artist Sano di Pietro depicting the Enthroned Madonna with Child.

In the city center there are a few shops and restaurants. I had a good dinner at the Passaparola restaurant, located within the old olive mill. From their terrace you can enjoy a beautiful landscape of Maremma. I stayed at the lovely 3 star Hotel il Melograno, about 1 km from the center of Montemerano and about 4km from the thermal baths of Saturnia. It offers nice and comfortable rooms with all comforts, including a nice patio to relax looking at the landscape. In addition the owner Azeglio was really nice and gave me great tips to visit the surroundings such as Rocchette di Fazio.

Nearby there is also Villa Acquaviva, where I had the chance to do wine tastings and visit the farm and see how it produces its great wines. As a matter of fact Villa Acquaviva is not just a charming relais offering a luxury stay, but it’s a famous wine producer making great wines, oil and incredibly delicious jams. In addition to their Morellino, the Bianco from Pitigliano and the new Maremma Chardonnay, I loved the family’s passion for their land and their work! As believe you can feel it in their products, as well as in their estate.
