Carro Matto in Florence

Carro Matto

Today if you pass by Florence city center you can see the Carro Matto, a dummy cart filled with wine bottles.

A bit of history

Carro Matto is a “Crazy Cart“, i.e. a special cart filled with thousands of bottles of wines coming from Rufina. As a matter of fact in the past farmers from Florentine hills used to come to Florence after the harvest to offer their wine to the Signoria and get it blessed by the authorities.

Then the colorful pageant reaches Piazza della Signoria around 5pm, where the wine is offered to everyone. From 5.30pm the musicians and flag-throwers show off their abilities.
