On Tuesday August 14th there is the traditional Balestro del Grifalco in the stunning Massa Marittima in Maremma.

A bit of history

The Balestro del Grifalco is the historical re-enactment of the ancient tournament between the crossbowmen of each Teriziere of Massa Marittima dating back to 13th century. 24 crossbowmen, eight for each district, should hit the corniolo, a conical shaped piece of wood, 42cm in height, with a diameter of 13cm and with its smaller end fitted to a black painted disc of 45cm in diameter. The corniolo is then attached in the center of a large “Girifalco”, a painted hawk.
