A lovely afternoon in San Gimignano

Saturday I spend a nice afternoon in San Gimignano.

San Gimignano is a small medieval hamlet near Siena, that is famous for its tall towers. It really looks to be in the Middle Ages when you enter the city passing through the large doors opened into massive walls. There were no many changes since then, as you can see at the beautiful museum San Gimignano 1300, that is perfect also for your kids since they organize a funny treasure hunt.

I climbed up the hill to the Rocca from where I enjoyed a glass of wine, visited the Museum of Vernaccia Wine and took great pictures to the incredible landscape. I then visited the contemporary art gallery iSculpture and felt in love with some of the new works they had.

Then I wandered around, passing through the small medieval streets of the center and I visited the Duomo. I was stunned once again from its beautiful frescoes, telling us stories from the past. Then I moved to Palazzo del Popolo, visiting the courtyard. I didn’t climb the Torre Grossa because it was too hot, but next time I’ll do it!

After a nice walk around I had dinner at l’Officina del Cacio, where I had one of the best dinner of the last few months. The peculiarity of this nice place is the familiar and lovely atmosphere and the delicious food. Everything is fresh and handmade, as well as pasta and bread. The menu varies according to seasonal products coming from the surroundings and depending on what the chef founded at the local market in the morning.

Several recipes are taken from the past, from the medieval and Renaissance cuisine, such as crostoni with chesse, cinnamon and orange, or the pork fillet with plums. Amazing! I had a great time, because the owners are really nice and they like to spend some time with you chatting. I strongly recommend l’Officina del Cacio.
