In Italy August 15th is a national holiday and we generally celebrate with a “pranzo all’italiana” on the beach or in the countryside. But this year come and celebrate Ferragosto in Tuscany where all state museums and archaeological sites will be open!

Museums open in Tuscany

Province of Arezzo

Anghiari – opening of the Museum of Arts and Traditions of the High Valley of Tevere from 10am to 7pm.

Arezzo – opening of the Archaeological Museum “Gaio Cilnio Mecenate” , Medieval and Modern Art Museum, both open from 8.30am to 7.30pm while the Bacci Chapel preserving Piero della Francesca frescoes open from 1pm to 6pm.

Castelfranco di Sopra – opening of the Abbey of Soffena and its incredible frescos by Neri di Bicci from 9am to 1pm.

Cortona – opening of the archaeological area from 8am to 2pm.

Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Pitti

Florence city

Uffizi Gallery opens from 8.15am to 6.50pm.

Academy Gallery opens from 8.15am to 6.50pm.

Bargello Museum opens from 8.15am to 5pm.

Medici Chapels open from 8.15am to 4.50pm.

San Marco Museum opens from 8.15am to 4.50pm.

Pitti Palace and its museums are open from 8.15am to 6.50pm. In particular the Silver Museum, the Palatine Gallery, the Modern Art Gallery, the Costume Gallery and the Pottery Museum.

Boboli Gardens open free from 8.15am to 7.30pm.

Bardini Garden opens for free from 8.15am to 7.30pm.

Villa il Ventaglio Garden opens from 8.15 to 7.30pm.

Florence Archaeological Museum

Archaeological Museum opens from 8am to 7pm.

Sant’Apollonia Last Supper opens from 8.15am to 1.50pm.

Andrea del Sarto Last Supper opens from 8.15am to 1.50pm.

Orsanmichele Church opens from 10am to 5pm.

Davanzati Museum of the Renaissance House opens from 8.15am to 1.50pm.

Medici’s Villas

Medicean Villa in Cerreto Guidi opens from 8.15am to 7pm.

Medicean Villa La Petraia in Florence opens from 8.15am to 7.30pm.

Gardens of Medicean Villa Castello in Florence opens from 8.15am to 7.30pm.

Medicean Villa of Poggio a Caiano in Prato opens from 8.15 to 7.30. Free guided tours every half an hour for maximum 50 people each time.

Province of Grosseto

Castiglione della Pescaia – opening of Archaeological area of Vetulonia from 10am to 7pm.

Grosseto – opening of Archaeological area of Roselle from 8.30am to 7.30pm.

Orbetello – opening of Antiquarium Statale di Cosa from 9am to 7.30pm.

Calci – opening of Certosa di Calci from 8.30am to 1.30pm. Free guided tours every hour.

Pisa – opening of San Matteo Museum from 8.30am to 1.30pm.

Monsummano Terme – opening of House Museum Giusti from 8am to 2pm and from 3pm to 7pm.

Pistoia – opening of Tau Church from 8.15am to 1.30pm.

Pistoia – opening of Santa Barbara Fortress from 8.15am to 1.30pm.

Pistoia – opening of San Desiderio Oratory.

Province of Siena

Chiusi – opening of Archaeological Museum from 9am to 8pm and the Pilgrim’s Tomb in Montebello from 1pm to 4pm.

Siena – opening of the Picture Gallery from 9am to 1pm.

    I can not wait to go to Tuscany in September. Hopefully they have some sort of museum passes or discounts when I arrive. While I am there I hope to be able to see Florence and really see what the Renaissance was all about. It looks as if there is plenty to see, so I do not think I will have an issue at least finding some of these places of history.

      Ciao Alex! As you said Florence is full of things to see, you’ll certainly be’ stunned! You can bus the Firenze Card and nave free entrance to museums an free transports. Bere the link http://www.firenzecard.it/index.php?lang=en
      When you’ll be here? I can look for more information about special events related to museums. I reco mene you visit Bracacci Chapel if you love Renaissance art. There you can admire an incredible fresco by Masaccio, Masolino and Lippi.
